Florence M. “Flo” Zumbahlen, age 86 of Newton, Illinois passed away peacefully at 8:05 a.m.M Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham in her sleep with her husband Adolph by her side after an eightyear battle with multiple myeloma.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, IL with Fr. Al Kemme celebrating mass.  Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park in Newton, IL.  Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. Thursday, May 30 at the church.  Memorials may be made to the Jasper County Cancer Fund P.O. Florence “Flo” Marie Donsbach Zumbahlen was born on March 4, 1927 in Effingham, IL the daughter of Clarence “Doc” Donsbach and Clara (Wolfert) Donsbach.  She met Adolph Anthony Zumbahlen of Sigel, IL and they were united in marriage at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, IL on January 4, 1947.  Florence was a hard working farmer’s wife and homemaker who valued her family.  She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, quilting, fishing, dancing and listening to country music.  She and Adolph took many fishing trips to Canada and Florida.  It was common to see her riding her bicycle around town and going to Hardee’s for morning coffee with the girls.  Many will remember Flo for her delicious blackberry pie and her laughter. Florence was a very social, active and forward-thinking woman.  She and her husband built their last home in their 80’s, demonstrating that age was only a state of mind.  Florence was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church of Newton, IL.

Florence is survived by her husband of 66 years Adolph; three sons, Gerald “Jerry” (Connie) Zumbahlen, John (Anthea) Zumbahlen and Mark (Priscilla “Poodie”) Zumbahlen all of Newton, IL; eight grandchildren:  Brad (Mandy) Zumbahlen of St. Charles, MO, Kathy Smithenry of Newton, Jeff (Amanda) Zumbahlen of Newton, Jennifer (Shanon) Barthelemy, Sarah (Daniel) Weiler of Newton, Garrett (Jessica) Zumbahlen of Newton, Lucas Zumbahlen of Newton, Brooke (Jerod) Harvey of Bogota, IL, two step-grandchildren: Chad (Laci) Potts of Haubstadt, IN and Bryan (Mary) Potts both of Fort Branch, IN; 15 great-grandchildren and one on the way, four step great-grandchildren, one brother, Leroy of Effingham and many nieces and nephews.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Tom Donsbach of Newton, sister Evelyn (Forrest) Hankins of Shumway, IL and her great grandchild, Karly Jo Smithenry of Newton, IL.
