Betty Holt (95) of Shelbyville

Betty Holt, 95, of Shelbyville, IL passed away at 9:58 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at Hawthorne Inn Assisted Living in Shelbyville, IL.

Betty was born on September 22, 1924, in Leverett, the daughter of Tom and Molly (Van Meter) Hershbarger. Tom and Molly were blessed with three daughters: Betty, Doris and Lois who were born in the same house as their father and his siblings. Betty graduated from the University of Illinois High School in Urbana in the Class of 1942. She and Charles Edmond Holt were united in holy matrimony on January 29, 1944, in New London, CT where Charles was attending Submarine School. Betty worked as a retail clerk for Jewel in Buffalo Grove, Glenview and Skokie before retiring from Jewel in 1959. The family moved to Shelbyville in 1985 where Betty worked as a caregiver and cleaned houses until retiring in 2002. Betty was a member of the Fourth Street United Methodist Church in Shelbyville. She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, playing dominoes and canasta, writing letters and could not go without her telephone.

Surviving are her son, Richard Holt of Shelbyville; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; daughter, Nancy Louise Hall; daughter-inlaw, Jackie Holt; two sisters, Lois and Doris.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made in Betty’s name to the Cunningham Children’s Home, 1301 N Cunningham Ave, Urbana, IL 61802.
