Melvin Albert Sporleder, age 91, of St. Peter, Illinois passed away at 6:50 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2020 at Lutheran Care Center in Altamont, Illinois.

There will be a private family service with burial at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in St. Peter, Illinois. Pastor Ryan Meyer will be officiating. Memorials may go to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Lutheran Care Center, or the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be expressed by clicking here

Melvin was born on December 24, 1928 in Fayette County, Illinois, the son of Walter and Alvena (Engeljohn) Sporleder. He married Lillian L.J. Suckow on September 12, 1954. Melvin was a foreman at St. Peter Lumber Yard and a farmer. He was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church and St. Peter American Legion. Melvin held several offices at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, he had been a Lutheran Care Center board member, Lone Grove Township Trustee, and a past member of LaGrove School Board. He was a talented carpenter, draftsman and handyman. His family was fortunate to have his trusty advice and lending hands for any building projects.Melvin was a veteran, having served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his son, Larry Sporleder (wife Carol) of Farina, Illinois; daughters, Joann Koss (husband Larry) of Altamont, Illinois and Mary Engel (husband Tedd) of Farina, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Lacey Summerville (husband Greg) of Flora, Illinois, Pam Buening (husband Jason) of Teutopolis, Illinois, Scott Sporleder (wife Jen) of Farina, Illinois, Mark Sporleder of Edgewood, Illinois, Ashley Yantis (husband James) of Cameron, North Carolina, John Koss (wife Shelley) of Altamont, Illinois, Travis Engel (wife Jennifer) of Hurst, Illinois, Lydia Middleton (husband Cody) of St. Peter, Illinois, 15 great-grandchildren with one on the way, sister-in-law Lois Sporleder of Altamont, Illinois, brother & sister-in-law David and Beverly Suckow of Altamont, Illinois and sister-in-law Linda Suckow of Altamont, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Alvena Sporleder; wife, Lillian Sporleder; one son in infancy, Mark Allen Sporleder; brother, Glen Sporleder; brothers-in-law Edgar Suckow, Melvin Suckow and Richard Suckow.
