Gilbert Hissong, 63, of St. Elmo, Illinois died at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26 at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont with Pee Wee Denton officiating. Burial will follow in Springhill Cemetery, rural Beecher City with military rites by American Legion Post #420 of St. Elmo and Gieseking-Schwertfeger VFW Post #7676 of Altamont. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to Lincolnland Hospice, 700 Broadway Avenue East, Suite 9, Mattoon, IL 61938. The family has requested casual attire. Gilbert was born September 5, 1948 in rural Beecher City to Harry Wilson and Juanita Faye (Williams) Hissong. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He married Nancy J. (McWhorter) Crockett Hissong April 21, 1996. He was a Roustabout with Petco Petroleum of St. Elmo. He was a member of the American Legion Post #420 of St. Elmo and Gieseking-Schwertfeger VFW Post #7676 of Altamont.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons, Ray (wife Gloria) Hissong of Edgewood, Michael (wife Becky) Hissong of Brownstown; stepson, Michael Crockett of St. Elmo; stepdaughters, Crystal (husband Michael) Veach of Effingham, and Robin (husband Jason) Verdeyen of St. Elmo; brothers, Gary Hissong of St. Elmo; sisters, Loretta Holman of St. Elmo and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepson, Bobby Joe Crockett; brother, Lavern Hissong; sisters, Darlene Shewmake and Imogene Williams.
