Arthur A. “Art” Johnson, 93, of Effingham, IL, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 19 at the First Baptist Church in Effingham. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Effingham with military rites. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Thursday prior to the service at the church.

Art was born on February 23, 1926, in Hoopeston, IL, the son of Hughie and Pearl (Justice) Johnson. He married Jeannie Murphy of Hoopeston in 1946 until her death in 1986. He later married Sue Chambliss in 1988, and she survives.

Art joined the Marines during World War II, the 3rd Division, 21st Marines and was wounded in March of 1945 on Iwo Jima. He attended Eastern Illinois University and taught Jr. High School in Hoopeston then was hired on as an insurance agent for State Farm Insurance in Hoopeston. In 1969, Art moved to Effingham to take a position as District Manager for State Farm Insurance until his retirement. Art was an avid golfer. He held countless club championships at Hubbard Trail Golf Course in Hoopeston, resulting in the tournament being named after him. After moving to Effingham, he was a member of the Effingham County Club for over 50 years. Art was a huge Chicago Cubs fan and also enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears play football. He also was an avid bowler. Art was a member of the First Baptist Church in Effingham and was baptized on May 6, 2010.

Art is survived by his wife, Sue Johnson; son, Kip (Judy) Johnson; stepdaughter, Tiffany (Harold) Tarr; stepson, Jeff (Heather) Chambliss; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and sister, Donna (John) Hamilton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold Johnson, Leslie Johnson, Jay Johnson, and Paul “Bus” Johnson; and sisters, Rachel Johnson and Dollie Hardy.
