Hubert S. McCarty, 91, of Effingham, IL, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Effingham, IL.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 8 at Church of Christ, 1311 S. Fourth Street, Effingham. Burial will be in Arborcrest Memorial Park in Effingham with military rites. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service Sunday, September 8 at the church. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Hubert was born on June 5, 1928, the son of Ralph E. and Ollie D. (White) McCarty in Jackson Township, Effingham County, IL. He married Mary Ruth Storm on December 5, 1947. Hubert taught one year of school in a one-room schoolhouse. He served his country in the United States Air Force from November 15, 1951 to October 26, 1955. Hubert retired from the United States Postal Service after 28 ½ years at the age of 55. He then worked as a handyman for 10 years and then retired again from Enterprise as a driver at 88 years old. Hubert was baptized January 1, 1950 and was a member of Effingham Church of Christ. Hubert and Mary Ruth liked to travel in their earlier years, and then made many trips to Winter Haven, FL as snowbirds.

Hubert leaves behind his wife of almost 72 years, Mary Ruth of Effingham; one daughter, Debbie (Craig) Mosher of Effingham; grandchildren, Catherine Tarr of Effingham, Bert (Lindsey) Durkin of Altamont, and Christine Durkin of Altamont; 6 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Musgrove, Douglas Musgrove, Stormy Durkin, Ivy Durkin, Isaiah Durkin, and Jazzy Lingafelter; one great-great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Lingafelter; brother, William (Jan) McCarty of Maine; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Vivian Hiles; sister-in-law, Margaret Kirchhoffer; many nieces and nephews; church family; and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Ollie McCarty; sister, Joan (Dick) Brown; and a great-grandson, Andrew Joseph Durkin.
