Florence “Tot” Peters, 94, of Effingham, IL, passed away Friday, August 23, 2019, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 30 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham.

Florence was born on May 25, 1925 in Effingham, IL, the daughter of Ferdinand and Mary (Bushur) Braun. She married William Peters on May 8, 1947, and they were married for 67 years, until his passing in 2014. Florence was known as “Tot” to many, a name given to her as a child by her father. She was an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church throughout her entire life. She graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1942. Florence served on many church and school committees as an adult during the 29 year span that her five children attended St. Anthony Schools.Florence greatly enjoyed others’ company and was a longtime member of Effingham Country Club and an avid golfer for nearly 50 years. She played in numerous bridge clubs throughout her life, continuing until the weeks before her passing. Her inspiring optimism and humor were always present, and she passed them on to her family and friends as an ingredient for a happy life.

Florence is survived by her children, William (wife, Nancy) Peters Jr. of Wildwood, MO, Sue Wood of Effingham, Tim (wife, Christy) Peters of Plano, TX, Rick (wife, Karen) Peters of Chapel Hill, TN, and Patrick (wife, Shelley) Peters of Argyle, TX; 10 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; sisters, Helen Zimmerman of Hillsboro and Virginia “Tiny” Kilborn of Springfield; sister-in-law, Joan Braun of Mattoon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; son-in-law, Lloyd Wood; grandson, Joshua Wood; sister, Geneva Schwermin; and brothers, Ernest Braun and Robert Braun.
