Verna J. Ballinger, 74, of Shelbyville, IL passed away at 4:08 a.m. Sunday, August 18, 2019 in her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday August 23 at Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Pastor John Curtis officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Casual attire is requested. Burial will be in Swedish Lutheran Cemetery near Neoga, IL. Memorials may be given to the family.

Verna was born on March 16, 1945 in Effingham, IL, the daughter of Arthur Gordon “Butch” and Irene “Danzil” (Sparling) Martin. She graduated from Dietrich High School in the class of 1963. Verna owned and operated Verna’s Cleaning Service in Shelbyville since 1972. She previously worked for Fedders in Effingham and provided home health care in Shelbyville. She married Marion Wesley Ballinger. Marion passed away in 2001. She married Tom Tillman on October 4, 2002 in Edwardsville, IL. Verna enjoyed mushroom hunting, gardening, hunting, fishing, watching sporting events of all kinds, playing cards and spending time with her family.

Verna is survived by husband, Tom Tillman of Shelbyville, IL; sons, Wes Ballinger (Stacey) of Cerro Gordo, IL, and Ed Ballinger (Katie) of Sullivan, IL; step-children, Elizabeth Winkler (Josh) of Lancaster, PA, Wyatt Tillman (Jennifer) and Shannan Blackman (Steve) of Shelbyville, IL; sister, Carolyn Settles of Mattoon; grandsons, Alec Ballinger, Zack Ballinger, Aiden Ballinger, and Justin Jonch; and 10 step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Marion; brother, Charlie Martin; and sister, Genevieve Peebles.
