Carol was born on November 21, 1938 in Teutopolis, IL to Arnold and Frances (Kenter) Heuerman of Teutopolis. She married John Hartke on August 16, 1958 and had six children. She enjoyed 53 golden years of marriage with John before he passed in 2011, traveling, camping, gardening, and watching their growing family flourish. Carol was a skilled cook at the Green Lantern in her younger years, later attending the Dorothy Chrysler School of Beauty and operating a beauty salon out of her home for many years. Carol later operated a home daycare and through it became a surrogate grandmother to many children in the Bishop Creek area. The rock of her family, Carol was an active member of St Isadore Catholic church, an avid gardener of roses, and renowned pie baker, but she most loved spending time with her dogs, Brandy and Sassy, and caring for her large flock of hummingbirds who returned to her year after year.

She is survived by her six children, Theresa Anderson (Guy) of Henderson, Nevada, Randy (Susan) Hartke of Effingham, Tammy Doedtman (Randy) of Effingham, Rick (Donna) Hartke of Dieterich, Roch (Tiffany) Hartke of Effingham, and Tricia (Brice) Birdsong of Effingham; 10 grandchildren, Christin Hartke, Trent Hartke, Hank (Jodi) Doedtman, Sarah (Wade) Slover , Megan (Jack) Looman, Cole Hartke, Taylor Hartke, Cody (Lia) Hartke, Jordyn (Taylor) Biggs, Mason Birdsong and Maci Birdsong; siblings, Donald (Carol) Heuerman, Joseph (Diane) Heuerman, Kenneth (Mary) Heuerman, Melvin “Dewey” (Shirley) Heuerman, Barbara (Richard) Cornell, Jeannie (Joseph) Hoene, and Rita (Moe) Kemme and Harold “Tubby” (Carol) Jurgens ; 8 great-grandchildren; and many other loving nieces, nephews, and relatives.
