Clarice Louise Maxedon Swain (102) of Windsor

Clarice Louise Maxedon Swain, 102, of Windsor, IL passed away on Monday, July 8, 2019 at Mattoon Health Care in Mattoon, IL, where she had been a resident for the past 16 months.

Clarice was born on March 20, 1917, in Windsor, IL, the daughter of Guy and Lena (Lovins) Maxedon. She was a 1934 graduate of Windsor High School in Windsor, IL. Clarice and Orvill Junior Swain were married on October 13, 1940 and he preceded her in death in 1985. Clarice worked as a beautician for several years in her own shop on Maine Street in Windsor, IL and worked at a shop in Phoenix, AZ in the 1940’s while her husband was stationed at an Army base in Gila Bend, AZ. She retired as a payroll clerk from Associated Spring Corporation in Mattoon in 1979 after 25 years. After her husband passed, Clarice spent her winters in Arizona for 30 years. She loved traveling and took several bus tours around the United States. She enjoyed reading, watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, her soap operas and meeting her friends for breakfast at the community building in Windsor, IL. She was a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the oldest living member of the Windsor Christian Church in Windsor, IL. She rarely missed church and loved having her cup of coffee waiting for her when she attended Sunday School class. Her pride and joy was her family.

Those she leaves behind to cherish a lifetime of memories are her son, Gil Swain (Ona Lee) of North Port, FL; her daughter, Pam Klein of Sun Lakes, AZ; grandchildren: Gil Swain Jr., (Angie), Grant Swain (Kris), Dawn Dorn (Jeremy), Heather Shults (Matt) and Rachel (Hector) Gonzalez; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Clarice’s niece, Nancy Goodwin, who took her to doctor appointments, lunch, etc., and was always there when Clarice needed her. The family is also thankful for Clarice’s friends and special neighbor, Gloria Helton.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Guy and Lena Maxedon; husband, Orvill Junior Swain; brothers: Wayne and Leland Maxedon; sisters: Ruth Bickers and Ada Shafer and son-in-law, Michael Klein.

A celebration of Clarice’s life will be held on Monday, July 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the Windsor Christian Church in Windsor, IL with Reverend Richard Eident and Reverend Pat Fahey presiding. Burial will take place in Windsor Cemetery in Windsor, IL. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Windsor Christian Church in Windsor, IL or the American Legion Garrett-Baldridge Post #725 in Windsor, IL. Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home in Windsor, IL is assisting the family.
