Jeanne Baker Adams (94) of Nokesville, Virginia

Jeanne Baker Adams was born on Thursday, September 25th, 1924 in Harvey, Illinois. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University in 1946. She attended the Washington Musical Institute from 1948 to 1952, then again from 1961 to 1962 where she earned a Certificate of Music. She married George Collins Adams on September 4th, 1955. In October of 1956, she and George welcomed their first daughter, April Lynn Adams (Talley). Six years later in November of 1962, they welcomed daughter Melanie Jeanne Adams (Brown). When the girls were young, she taught piano lessons. In 1968 Jeanne and her family settled in Nokesville, Virginia. Upon moving to Nokesville, she taught 6th grade from 1967 to 1970 at Brentsville District Junior-Senior High School, then taught 12th grade English from 1970 to 1971. During that time, she became a guidance counselor at Brentsville. She then went on to obtain her Master's degree in Counselor Education from the University of Virginia in 1973 and continued as a guidance counselor until she retired.

Immediately upon moving to Nokesville, Jeanne and her family began attending Nokesville United Methodist Church (NUMC) where she became the Organist. Jeanne played the organ at NUMC for 40+ years. She also accompanied the choir for much of that time. In her later years, she directed the choir. Jeanne was extremely dedicated to the church. She participated in many committees and Bible studies, and started the Bereavement Committee to help ease the burden of those who had lost loved ones. She volunteered for many groups such as Meals on Wheels and the Nokesville Community Library. She was a member of the Homemakers Club who she lovingly referred to as her "Homies".

Jeanne and George had two granddaughters that they absolutely adored. Christine Valerie Brown, born in June of 1989 and Megan Lyn Talley born in April of 1991. Jeanne spent almost every summer while they were young caring for the girls and taking them to swim practice. In her later years, Jeanne loved playing the piano while Megan played the violin and she looked forward to Sunday night phone calls from Christine.

She loved to bowl and eventually settled into a family team in the United Methodist Mixed league. She enjoyed calligraphy, gardening, lunch with friends, beach trips, and family game nights, and was an avid reader. She was a lifelong baseball fan. Her first baseball hero was Stan Musial followed much later by Cal Ripken Jr. Jeanne's baseball dreams were fulfilled when Washington, DC welcomed the Nationals in 2005. Jeanne always tried to attend at least one game a year, preferably when the Washington Nationals played the St. Louis Cardinals (she even let the Cardinals' fan in our group sit with us).

For the last two months of her life, Jeanne was lovingly cared for by Barbara Booth. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents William Hargrove Baker and Beatrice Gieseking, her husband George Collins Adams, and her brother William Harold Baker (Carolyn) and an uncle Gerald (Ruth) Gieseking. She is survived by her daughters April Lynn Talley (Mike) and Melanie Adams Brown (Jeff) and her granddaughters Christine Valerie Brown and Megan Lyn Talley.

The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, June 19, from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the Nokesville United Methodist Church, 12508 Aden Road, Nokesville, Virginia. A funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. Immediately following the service a meal will be served at the church. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. at Culpeper National Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed by clicking here.
