Hilma M. Goeckner, 91, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2018 at Willowbrook of Effingham, with family by her side.

Hilma was born November 22, 1927 in Effingham, IL to John and Rosa (Verdeyen) Bushur. She married Virgil Aloysius Goeckner on October 15, 1946 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham.

Virgil survives, as do nine of their eleven children: Gary (Meg) of Effingham; Ron (Becky) of Normal; Dan (Debbie) of Mequon, WI; Vic (Sara) of Auburn; Rick (Barb) of Cedarburg, WI; Pat (Beth) of Rockford; Jean (Mike) Stone of Normal; Chris of St. Louis, MO; and Bryon (Roberta) of Edwardsville. Hilma is also survived by 34 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; sister, Louise Niebrugge; brothers, Don (Anna May) Bushur and Lenny (Rosie) Bushur; and sister-in-law, Bertha Bushur.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Mike; daughter, Marlene; and brother, Harold Bushur.

It is so fitting in this season of giving, to give back to God someone who was so good in giving of herself. As a wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great grandmother, she shared her love and laughter unconditionally. Hilma was an active volunteer in the church and in the community with Catholic Charities, FISH, Second Hand Rose, and Meals on Wheels. For many years, she did one hour of adoration at 3:00 AM one day a week at St. Anthony’s perpetual adoration chapel. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women. Hilma was a passionate and avid golfer and walker. We celebrated when she successfully made a hole-in-one before Virgil did! She was loved, and we will miss her smile and laughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 28 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. rosary Thursday at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham.

Memorial donations may be made to Catholic Charities: 1502 E Fayette Ave, Effingham, IL 62401 or St. Anthony Schools. Online condolences may be shared by clicking here
