Russell Dale Slifer (79) of Shelbyville

Russell Dale Slifer, 79, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away 3:20 p.m. Monday, August 20, 2018 in Shelbyville Manor, Shelbyville, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 24 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Revs. Kathy Lewis, C.W. Lewis and David Ducommon officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and one hour before the service on Friday. Burial will be in Stewardson Cemetery with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to the Shelby County Honor Guard, Mode United Methodist Church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Shelbyville, or the Stewardson-Strasburg FFA.

Russell was born on February 5, 1939 in Mode, IL the son of Dick William and Mildred Hazel (Smith) Slifer. He graduated from Stewardson-Strasburg High School in the Class of 1957. In 1962, Russell entered the U.S. Army National Guard and served until 1968. Russell worked for Sta-Rite Ginnie Lou, Inc. and the Oliver Corporation both in Shelbyville. He and his brother Ralph later owned and operated Slifer Brothers, a grain and livestock farm near Mode, IL. He was a member of the Mode United Methodist Church, Roy Vanderpool Legion Post #81 of Shelbyville, IL and Shelby County Farm Bureau. He married Margaret Karen Boldt on October 20, 1962 and she preceded him in death on June 24, 1996. Russell married Nancy Ann Reed Snyder on November 30, 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Shelbyville, IL; sons, Michael Slifer and wife Jennifer of Mode, IL and Brad Slifer and wife Christine of Mode, IL; step-children, Kendall Snyder and wife Deb of Lakewood, IL, Kara Shuff and husband Rob of Shelbyville, IL and Kathleen Lay and husband Shane of Haubstadt, IN; brothers, Jim Slifer and wife Pat of Beecher City, IL, Kenneth Slifer and wife Helen of Mode, IL, Richard Slifer of Stewardson, IL, Max Slifer of Decatur, IL, Paul Slifer and wife Mary of Shumway, IL, and Glen Wayne Slifer and wife Jane of Mode, IL; sisters, Lila Miller of Monticello, IL and Nancy Mulcahy and husband Jim of Taylorville, IL; sister-in-law, Bessie Slifer of Taylorville, IL; grandchildren, Justin Slifer, Kirk Slifer, Dylan Slifer, Derek Slifer, Brendan Slifer, Blake Slifer, and Emma Slifer; step grandchildren, Cody Snyder, Autum Snyder, Trenton Shuff, Maisie Lay, Alexandra Davis and husband Zach, and Skylar Lay; one step great grandchild, Camdyn Davis; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Margaret Karen Slifer; brother, Ralph Slifer; sister, Carol Sue Matheny and husband Don; and brother-in-law, Ralph Miller.
