Carl Franklin McClain was born Nov. 17, 1918, in Shelbyville, IL., the son of Frank and Nannie (Grant) McClain. Carl served in the 77th Division of the U.S. Army as a medic in the South Pacific during World War II. Many people are now the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of other servicemen whose lives Carl helped save while serving as a combat medic in the South Pacific battles. He returned to Shelbyville and was employed at Hice Davis Grain Elevator in Shelbyville, and later at the Decatur-based Caterpillar plant, all while also working as a farmer.

Carl married Norma Lorene Gordon in 1943 and they were blessed with five sons: Dennis, Kelley, Colin, David, and Tim.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene; and son, Kelley.

Carl’s family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Villas of Hollybrook for their care of him during his residency there in recent years, and Lincolnland Hospice of Sarah Bush Lincoln for their excellent care for Carl in his recent declining months.
