John C. McCarthy, 88, of Newton and former resident of Tumbling Shoals, Arkansas, passed away at 11:00pm Sunday, April 15, 2018 at his home.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM – Saturday, May 5 at Honey Cemetery in Bogota, Illinois, with full military rites by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion. The family will receive friends at an open house at St. Thomas Parish Center in Newton, Illinois, immediate following the graveside until 4:30 PM. In loving memory of John, memorials may be made to the Jasper County Cancer Fund PO Box 333 Newton, Illinois 62448.  Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois.  

John was born on August 19, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of William and Catherine (Zielmer) McCarthy.  He married Eva Smith in 1976, and she preceded him in death February 11, 2000.

John was a union electrician for many years.  

John served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  He was a member of the Jasper Post #20 American Legion in Newton, Illinois, and a gold member of the VFW Post #3543 in Tumbling Shoals, Arkansas.

John enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

John is survived by: Children – Evelyn (John) Germer of Jacksonville, Florida; Denisse (Gerald) Ochs of Newton, Illinois; Charles (Cindy) Gorrell of Staunton, Virginia and Rory “Bubba” Gorrell of Newton, Illinois.  Grandchildren – Shelley (Danny) Simpson of Orlando, Florida; Melody Gorrell of Maine; Colten (Ashley) Gorrell of Chickamauga, Georgia; Cole Alwart of Newton, Illinois and Skylar (Kenna) Salyers.  Great Grandchildren – Tyler Savoy, Ava Gorrell, Danielle Simpson, Nash Gorrell, Gus Gorrell, Eliyas Salyers, Paisley Salyers, Brayton Salyers and Aalia Hall.  Brothers – Thomas McCarthy of Oak Forest, Illinois; Danny McCarthy of Lady Lake, Florida  Sister – Cathy (John) Trybula of Tinley Park, Illinois.

John was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter Peggy Willams, brothers Emmett and Clifford McCarthy, sisters Dorothy Goude, Peggy Puscizna and Ruthie Slemp.
