Harriett L. Wharton, 85, of Altamont, died at 3:42 a.m., Saturday, April 14, 2018 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont with Rev. Ed Wojnar officiating. Burial will follow at Arborcrest Memorial Park, rural Effingham. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Fear Nothing or the donors’ choice.

Harriett was born on Tuesday, April 19, 1932 in Decatur to Orville E. and Ellen Wilson Calhoun. She married Gene Wharton on August 11, 1951 at the Methodist Parsonage in Altamont. Harriett was affiliated with Asbury United Methodist Church, Mason. She had worked at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital and area nursing homes as a CNA and also was employed at Martins IGA, Effingham. She had a love for children with special needs and served as an aid on the Special Ed bus and also as a one on one aid for the Altamont School District.

She is survived by her husband of Altamont. Sons; Raleigh E. ‘Bud’ (Julie) Wharton, Scott (Carrie) Wharton and Loren ‘Tater’ Wharton all of Mason. Daughters; Marsha (Bob) Nolan of Farina, Carol ‘Denny’ (Jerry) Ruffner of Mason and Darcy (Corey) Rhoades of Littleton, CO. Sister; Mary Ellen Ross of Bourbonnais, 13 grandchildren and 19 Great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter in law Ann Wharton, brothers John and Orville Calhoun and sisters O. Gene Watkins, Pat Thompson and Shelia ‘Pepper’ Cole.
