Gerald H. “Gerry” Deibel, 75, of Bloomington, IL, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018, at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, IL after his battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14 at Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Fourth Street, Effingham, IL 62401. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Effingham, with military rites. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Gerry was born on July 7, 1942, in Effingham County, IL, the son of John Philip and Christine J. (Wendt) Deibel. He was a 1960 graduate of Dieterich High School and a 1964 graduate of Eastern Illinois University with a B.S. Degree in Business. Gerry served his country in the United States Army from 1964-1966 with the 32nd Engineers while he was stationed in Verdun, France.

Gerry worked as an accountant with Country Companies for 30 years. He was an avid traveler having visited many states and Europe. He also enjoyed many visits back to Effingham County. His love of the outdoors took him hunting, fishing and golfing. Those trips were shared with his many friends. He was a loyal St. Louis Cardinals fan. Gerry had a life well lived.

Gerry is survived by his sister-in-law, Ruth Deibel of Effingham; nephew, Richard “Dick” (Sonja) Deibel of Effingham; nieces, Karen Deibel of Oklahoma, Paula (Charles) Tegeler of Effingham, and Julia (Brian) Hayes of Effingham; and 4 great-nephews and 2 great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-brothers, Edward J. Deibel and John Philip Deibel Jr; and sister-in-law, Betty Deibel.
