David Lee Owen, 81, of Greenup, IL passed away at 6:39 p.m. on Friday May 11, 2012 at his residence.

Memorial sunset services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday May 17, 2012 at the Greenup Cemetery. Graveside Military Rites conducted by Cumberland County Veterans will be at service time. Friends and family are invited to join the family after 7:00 pm.

David Lee Owen was born on October 29, 1930 in Cumberland County Illinois, the son of Palmer and Grace (Cook) Owen. He married Delores Brown on December 31, 1951. She preceded him in death on March 21, 2012.

Surviving are daughters, Shanna (Bruce) Gross of Casey, Tamara Owen of Toledo, Joni James and special friend Brad Winnett of Greenup, step-daughter Sheila Maulding of Casey; brother Nilan “Tuffy” Owen of St. Joseph Illinois; sisters Ethel Carr and Alice Dloniak both of Greenup; grandchildren Ryan Seymour, Janna and Braden Shaffer; step-grandchildren Scott Padrick, Kim Padrick and Jason Maulding and five great-grandchildren. David was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dale, Wayne, Marlon “Hop”, and Darrel Owen.

As a young man David worked in the oilfields and for U.S.I. in Tuscola for fifteen years. In 1970 David started working at the Greenup Post Office. In 1980 he promoted to the position of Post Master and retired in 1990. David served his community well and was active in bringing 911 to Cumberland County. He served on the Greenup Village Board, and was a Greenup Volunteer Fireman. He was a member of Greenup Masonic Lodge, Ansar Shrine and the Greenup American Legion.

David served his country in the United States Army from 1948 – 1951 with the 516th Airborne Infantry.

David had a deep appreciation for nature and found joy in gardening and tending to his flowers and birds.
