Gerald Paul "Gary" Seiler, 79, of Effingham died at 4:27am Friday, February 2, 2018 at Lewis Memorial Christian Rehab in Springfield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 7 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Effingham, with military rites. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Schools, FISH, or donor’s choice.

Gary was born on January 6, 1939 in Effingham, IL, the son of Albert J. and Bernice (Michl) Seiler. He was united in marriage to Sharon Rincker on July 1, 1968, and she survives. Gary served his country in the U.S. Army from August 1962 to December 1965 and was stationed in Fort Sheridan, IL. He was transferred to the Reinforcement USAR Control Group for two years and then to Korea for one year. He was decorated with the Marksman Badge (Carbine), Sharpshooter Badge (Pistol), and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the Effingham American Legion Post 120 and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Gary held a job with the Illinois Traffic Department and then was an Altamont mail carrier for many years, retiring in 1992. During retirement he worked part time at Nova. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Sharon, even going to Alaska and California. He spent time walking at the mall and socializing with his friends. Gary also liked remodeling and woodworking. However, family and spending time with his children and grandchildren was most important.

Gary is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sharon Seiler of Effingham; daughter, Sherri (George) Rauch of Chatham; sons, Craig (partner, Aundrea Brooks) Seiler of Newton, and Michael (Cindy) Seiler of Effingham; grandchildren, Jason (Cailtin) Rauch of Chatham, Tiffani (Jon) Schick of St. Louis, MO,  Trent (significant other, Kristine Blankenship) Seiler of Mattoon, and Timothy and Bradley Seiler both of Effingham; great-grandchildren, Baylee, Madilyn, Lydia, Rozalinn, Jack, Carter, Georgia Mae, and Logan; brothers, Ralph (Mary) Seiler of Effingham, John (Cindy) Seiler of St. Peters, MO, and Albert Jr. (Doris) Seiler of Effingham; sisters, Carol Seiler and Mary Jo Seiler both of Effingham; and sisters-in-law, Nancy (Roger) Ohnesorge of Altamont, and Ruby Seiler of Teutopolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nadine (Glenn) Bovard; brothers, Kenneth Seiler and Ronald Seiler; nephew, Chris Westjohn; and sister-in-law, Linda (Ed) Levitt.
