Eugene A. "Gene" Probst (91) of rural Effingham

Eugene A. “Gene” Probst, 91, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017 at his home in rural Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 6 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Bishop Creek, with burial in the church cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the church. A prayer service will be held from 3:45 to 4pm for the family, then the public will be admitted from 4 to 7pm. Memorials may be made to the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Catholic Charities of Effingham or St. Michael's School of Sigel.

Gene was born August 28, 1926 in rural Effingham, the son of Herman Frank and Mary Philomena “Minnie” (Hartke) Probst. He married Pauline M. Haarmann on May 20, 1950 and she preceded him in death in 2013. He and Pauline lived on their rural Effingham farm for over 60 years. Gene served with the United States Army (Calvary division) during WWII. He was a member of the St. Isidore Parish, Secular Franciscans, Teutopolis American Legion Post #924, and the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council # 2874, Third and Fourth Degree.

Gene is survived by his three sons, Frank (Darcilene) of Santarem, Brazil, South America, Earl (Mary Jo) of Dieterich and Steve of Effingham; four daughters, Sister Connie Probst OSF, Franciscan Sister of Our Lady of Perpetual Help of St. Louis, MO, Margie (Tom) Deters of Sigel, Donna (Bob) Lueken of Effingham and Carol Jean (Bruce) Bueker of Sigel; 20 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren;  surviving in-laws: Eugene and Lucy Westendorf; Adeline Probst, Theresa Probst, Phyllis Haarmann and Verena Kemme.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pauline; grandchild, James E. Bueker; five brothers, Ambrose, Ewald, Urban, Roger and Paul; two sisters, Gert Pals and Alma Wente.
