Daniel R. “Sweetroll” Smith, 77, passed away Tuesday afternoon, November 21, 2017 at his home in Teutopolis with his family by his side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 25 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis with burial in St. Francis Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the church, with a 5:45 p.m. parish prayer service and a 7:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary. Memorial donations may be made to donor’s choice.

Dan was born July 27, 1940 in Effingham, the son of Stanley and Agnes (Koester) Smith. He was a 1958 graduate of Teutopolis High School and served with the United States Navy from 1958 - 1961. Dan married Joan P. Stuckey on September 16, 1961 and she survives. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis, St. Francis Men’s Sodality, Teutopolis Knights of Columbus, Teutopolis American Legion Post #924 and was a former Teutopolis Volunteer Firefighter. Dan was employed for 30 years with Lewis Baking Company. He never knew a stranger and always enjoyed his time with those around him. Dan was a lover of the outdoors and took part in fishing. He savored his time with his grandchildren and enjoyed watching the activities they were involved in.

Dan is survived by his wife, Joan of Teutopolis; three sons, Doug (Gail), Todd (Karen) and Tim (Jody), all of Teutopolis; daughter, Lynn Koester of Effingham; sister, Diana (Paul) Doedtman of Effingham; 12 grandchildren, Kelsey (Caleb) Mette, Nikki (Justin) Dust, Molly Smith, Bob Koester, Emily (Brock) Spindler, Paige Koester, Tyler Smith, Kaitlin Smith, Kyle Smith, Derek Smith, Devin Smith, Dawson Smith; 3 great-grandchildren, Joseph Mette, Jonathan Mette and Leo Spindler.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth (Larry) Williamson and brother, Jim (Peggy) Smith.
