Phillip Russell Apple, 82, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 11:07 a.m. Saturday, October 15, 2016, at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Illinois.

Funeral servies will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 19 at Meyer Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Private family burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton. In loving memory of Phillip, memorials may be made to the Newton Athletic Boosters.

Phillip was born April 30, 1934 in Martinsville, the son of  Russell E. and Rose (Green) Apple. He married Zella Chapman November 8, 1953 in Newton and she survives. Phillip retired from Norris Electric Cooperative in Newton after 44 years of service. He was a member of the Olney Eagles and the Olney Elks Club. Phillip enjoyed playing golf, mushroom hutning and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Phillip is survived by his wife of 62 years, Zella Apple of Newton; children, Crystal Frank of Newburg, Indiana, Michael (wife Leslie) Apple of Newton, Bruce Apple of Newton; grandchildren, Kiley Gordon of Paris, Breyton (wife Tara) Apple of Newton and Brittany Frank of Newburg, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Kiel Apple of Newton and Gabe Gordon of Effingham; sister, Nancy (husband Van) Munsey of Carmi.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
