Merl Wayne Shamhart, 76, of rural Wheeler died at 1:24pm Thursday, October 11, 2012 at his home.

Funeral services celebrating Merl’s life will be held at 10:00 AM – Monday, October 15, 2012 at the Blake-Wright Funeral Home in Dieterich, IL with Mike Knepper officiating.  Burial will be in the Bailey Cemetery near Latona, IL with full military rites by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion.  Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 PM – Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the funeral home.   In loving memory of Merl, memorials may be made to the Jasper County Cancer Fund or American Heart Association.  The obituary can be viewed and condolences left at www.blakefh.com.

Merl was born on February 29, 1936 in Jasper County, IL the son of Perry and Gerlene (Lewis) Shamhart.  He married Wilma Loy on June 15, 1959 in Jackson, MI and she survives.  Merl served his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1959 during the Korean Conflict. Merl was a self employed truck driver and formerly owned the DS &G in Newton, IL. Merl was a former member of the Winterrowd Masonic Lodge #664 and had been a Shriner. Merl enjoyed spending his time with his family especially his grandchildren.  He also enjoyed helping his sons with their passion of car racing.

Merl was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Kristen Shamhart; twin brother Burl Shamhart and a sister Vickie Shamhart.
