Sherald Bird Ballinger Jr., 68, of Toledo, IL passed away at 3:00 pm on Friday April 6, 2012 at his daughter Joy’s residence in Mattoon, IL.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday April 10, 2012 at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Toledo, IL.  Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday evening at the funeral chapel. There will be Masonic rites given at 8:00 pm on Monday at the end of the visitation. Burial will be in the Janesville Cemetery.

Bird was born on October 9, 1943 in Gulf Port, Mississippi the son of Sherald & Reva (Decker) Ballinger. He married Maxine Wilson on July 23, 1993. Surviving is his wife Maxine, daughters Theresa (Ballinger) Arthur of Mattoon, Hope Ballinger and special friend Rich Lambird of Mattoon, and Joy “Dude” (Ballinger) Hooker and husband Troy of Mattoon; Maxine’s children Daniel wife Helen Walker of Toledo, David Lee Walker of Mattoon and Sueann husband Darrell Kimble of Greenup, IL; brother Gerald Russell Ballinger of Toledo and sister Mary “Cookie” husband John Bayless of Toledo; he is grandfather of 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 grandchild.

Bird retired from the Village of Toledo after 37 years of service he also was an ambulance driver of the Toledo area Ambulance for 21 years. Bird loved his hometown.  He loved drag racing and was co- owner of the Mule Train Drag car, he was a C.B. enthusiast, member of the Toledo Sons of The American Legion, a 32nd degree Mason and member of Toledo Masonic Lodge AF &AM # 834, and member of the National Rifle Association and most recently became a member of the Lakeland Church of Christ.
