Lana Sue Carter (67) of Sandoval

Lana Sue Carter, 67, of Sandoval, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2014 at her home.  
She was born the daughter of Albert and Margaret (Hintz) Hopkins on March 16, 1947 in Vandalia.  She married Wayne Carter on August 6, 1966 at the Patoka Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne Carter of Sandoval; daughter Stacie Slavens, husband Charlie of Effingham; son Matt Carter, wife Laura of Sandoval; grandchildren Andrew Slavens & fiancée Nicole Rutledge, Kelsey Carter & fiancé Casey McKenzie, Rachel Slavens, Caleb Carter, Krista Carter and Chloe Carter; sisters Jo Ann Brazle of Vandalia and Janet Miller of Ocala FL; step-sister Shelley Hilton, husband Butch of Sandoval; sister-in-law Donna Resch, husband Ray of Centralia; brother-in-law Lonnie Carter, wife Joan of Redding CA; step-brother Steve Cox, wife Terri of Salem; step-sisters-in-law Barbara Sullivan of Sandoval, Donna Timmons of Sandoval, step-brothers-in-law Joe Basola & wife Judy of Decatur, Tom Holstlaw of Sandoval, Lewis Basola & wife Mary of Sandoval, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Margaret Hopkins, step-mother Pauline Hopkins, brother Gary Hopkins, and additional family Richard and Ruth Carter, Bud and Jonell Ahlf, Tom Carter, Lee Roy Sullivan, and Ruth (Teddy) Holstlaw. Mrs. Carter was a 1965 graduate of Patoka High School.  She completed two years of Ruth's Cosmetology School, in Centralia, before she graduated high school.  Her first job was at DeAnn's Beauty Salon in Centralia.  In 1970, she moved to Sandoval and the following year she opened her beauty shop in her home.  She ended her career in 2005.  Lana was a long time member of the Sandoval United Methodist Church, serving as financial secretary, chairman of the board, and Sunday school teacher.  She was instrumental in starting the Shalom Food Pantry and Kids for Christ at her church.  She was a member of the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, charter member of the Thyme Garden Club, past member of the Sandoval Women's Club, board member of the SAFE organization, member of the Isaac Hull Chapter of DAR, member of the John A. Logan Chapter of Daughters of the Union. She was an avid golfer and co-owned Colonial Golf Course in Sandoval.  She was a loving wife and mother who cherished the time she spent with her family.  She was devoted to her family and was proud of what her children and grandchildren achieved in their lives.
Services for Mrs. Carter will be held 10:00 a. m. Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Sandoval United Methodist Church.  Rev. Mark Slaatte and Rev. Clayton Coffey, will officiate with burial following at Hillcrest Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Sandoval United Methodist Church.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the Sandoval United Methodist Church.  Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval is in charge of arrangements.
