April 15-29

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that construction of the turn lanes on Fayette Avenue through the Raney Street intersection in Effingham begins Monday, April 15. This closure is part of the Fayette Ave. reconstruction project.

Through April 29, Fayette Avenue left turns onto Raney Street will not be allowed, but one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on Fayette Avenue through the intersection. Only right turns onto Fayette Avenue from Raney Street will be allowed, and through traffic is prohibited.

The northbound traffic on Raney Street wanting to turn left will be detoured utilizing Grove Avenue and Henrietta Street. Eastbound traffic wanting to access the Speedway gas station will use their east entrance. Signs and message boards will be posted to direct traffic during this partial closure.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Tuesday, April 9

The Illinois Department of Transportation is reminding the public that the reconstruction of westbound Interstate 70 from just east of the I-57/70 interchange to just east of the Cumberland/Effingham County line, east of Montrose, will begin, weather permitting, Tuesday, April 9. The project will include several new safety features this year and a start date timed to not interfere with Monday’s solar eclipse that is anticipated to bring large crowds to the southern part of the state. In addition, IDOT has created a webpage, idot.click/I70, to keep motorists informed of important updates and changing conditions along the I-70/U.S. 40 corridor.

Once the work zone is established starting Tuesday, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on the eastbound lanes rebuilt last year, separated by the barrier walls, while the westbound lanes are reconstructed. Until the project is complete this fall, backups and congestion approaching the work zone should be anticipated at all times. Drivers are urged to slow down, put down their phones and devices, avoid all distractions, and watch for workers and equipment as well as give their undivided attention to traffic control signs and changing conditions in and around the work zone.

The work zone will include several new safety elements. They include extra dynamic message signs posted in advance of the northbound and eastbound I-57/70 split, helping to move I-57 traffic to the left lane. Temporary rumble strips will be installed prior to the work zone and through it to help keep drivers alert. Illinois State Police will have an enhanced presence throughout this construction season, checking for distracted driving, speeding and other traffic offenses.

In recent weeks, IDOT has met and coordinated with local police and fire departments in Effingham County to advise them on other safety elements added at their request, including pull-off locations in the work zone to respond to vehicle breakdowns or crashes. The group also discussed the most efficient method to access the work zone when crashes or other emergencies occur as well as other logistical details aimed at keeping the public safe.

March 18-End Of May

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that a patching and resurfacing project on Illinois 33 will begin Monday, March 18. The project, just under nine miles, starts at the Salt Creek bridge in Effingham and ends at Pine Street in Dieterich. It is estimated that the work will be completed by the end of May.

Lane closures are expected. Flaggers will be used to direct traffic through the work zones.

Monday, Feb. 19-?

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces the closure for the reconstruction of Henrietta Street from Fayette Avenue to Edgar Avenue on Monday, Feb. 19.

A marked detour will utilize Outer Belt West and Fayette Avenue. Motorists wanting to access destinations, including Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School located south of the closure can use Raney Street and Grove Avenue. The intersection of Henrietta Street and Fayette Avenue will remain open to traffic, but no traffic will be able to turn south onto Henrietta. East/west traffic on Fayette Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the intersection. Henrietta Street will reopen when this portion of the project is completed, which is scheduled for early April.

Motorists can expect delays and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
