Celebrate an old-fashioned Independence Day at the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site with games, music, food and even cricket lessons Saturday, July 6.

Whenever 19th century Americans gathered for community events, there was always a ball game of some sort. Before baseball’s surge in popularity after the Civil War, that game was often cricket. American cricket player and historian Tom Melville will lead participants through short, informal games throughout the day at the Lincoln Log Cabin festivities. The games are open to everyone, and absolutely no experience is required. At 1 p.m. the Declaration of Independence will be read. The celebration also includes a patriotic tableau and a basket social where visitors can bid on delicious pies and cakes. Period music will be provided throughout the day by the site’s volunteers.

Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Facebook.com/IllinoisHistory), was the last home of Thomas and Sarah Bush Lincoln, father and stepmother of Abraham Lincoln.  It is located eight miles south of Charleston.
