It begins with raw wool from a sheep and ends with a beautiful blanket or sturdy pants. Experts at the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site will explain all the steps in between on Saturday, May 4. The free event at the site near Charleston runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Discover how the Lincoln family produced finished cloth for use on the farmstead. Watch the interpreters as they weave on the site’s mid-19th century looms, producing cloth for clothes and blankets. Visitors can participate in hands-on demonstrations of sorting and washing the wool, teasing and carding it and finally spinning the wool into yarn that will be knitted into items following 19th century patterns. Interpreters and volunteers will also demonstrate dying and felting as well as the final step of turning woolen jean cloth into pants for Mr. Lincoln.

A special addition this year is the Coverlet Identification Clinic. Visitors can bring out coverlets and other linens to the site for identification and evaluation.  Sharon Stovall will examine the antique textiles.
