St. Anthony High School to present the play, Grandmother Tales by R. Rex Stephenson Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m.
When thinking of Appalachian storytelling, people tend to think of Jack's tales and stalwart heroes like Wicked John. But the mountains have their feisty heroines too, and Grandmother Tales is a celebration of two of these free spirits, Mutsmag and Ashpet. Grandmother, who gathers her young'uns with a song and a guitar, narrates in the best story theatre tradition. She invites her listeners to take roles as undertakers, ugly sisters, trees, horses and even a fireplace. The stories she shares are of Mutsmag, derived from Scottish folklore, and Ashpet, a southern Appalachian Cinderella.
Performances are Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased in advance at the St. Anthony High School office or at the door. Cast members include: Rachel Beals, Libby Brandt, Laura Deters, Erin Goeckner, Natalie Goeckner, Tierney Hammer, Nardeen Kaldas, Gus Koester, Chloe Malone, and Dawn McGuire.
