English scholar Dr. Jad Smith will discuss how science fiction writer Alfred Bester combined elements of modernism and popular pulp fiction to transform the field of science fiction on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 9 am in the Coleman Hall Auditorium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University. The talk is free and open to the public.

“Professor Smith has written two books on the subject of science fiction writers whose work deserves further attention,” says Dana Ringuette, chair of the EIU Department of English. “This keynote gives our students and community a chance to hear from a national expert on science fiction and the genre of cyberpunk.”

Smith, a professor of English and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies, has authored two books: John Brunner (2013) and Alfred Bester (2016) both of which appeared in the University of Illinois Press’s Modern Masters of Science Fiction series. His work on eighteenth-century British literature has appeared in journals such as English Literary History and Eighteenth Century: Theory and Interpretation, as well as various other publications.

Smith’s talk is the keynote for the annual English Studies Conference. The annual conference features presentations by students in English classes at EIU as well as talks by returning alumni.

The English Studies conference is sponsored by the EIU English Department with generous support from the Redden Foundation.
