Kim Jines told our Greg Sapp at the scene that she and their children Chandler and Lyndsie were in the house with their two dogs at the time the fire occurred. She said Chandler was working on a flint knife project for Scouts and something in Chandler's bedroom in the rear of the house caught fire. Kim said she heard cracking and popping and got everyone out of the house.
Considerable damage was done to the structure and contents. Firefighters said there were flames coming out of the roof when they reached the scene. No neighboring structures were affected.
Firefighters from Effingham were assisted by companies from Teutopolis and Watson and also on scene were Effingham city police officers and the American Red Cross.
The fire was reported around 10pm, and firefighters had the fire under control within 45 minutes.
The Jines family was being assisted by Red Cross with accommodations.
