Effingham County Sheriff's Department deputies are trying to find out who shot a dog south of Watson earlier this week.

Sheriff's Department Investigator Bill Arnold Friday said the dog was shot Monday.  The owner of the dog contacted our newsroom and Arnold confirmed the dog was shot in the head with a shotgun loaded with birdshot.

The dog's owner acknowledged her dog was running loose, but had only run away a short time earlier and couldn't have gotten far from her home.  She said another dog running with her dog is still missing.

The dog, a full-blooded Boxer, arrived at her owner's door and was bleeding from the head.  The owner took the dog, named Maggie, to the veterinarian and the animal will recover.

Arnold said the sheriff's department would like more information on the incident and hopes someone with information would contact their office at 342-2101 or phone Crimestoppers at 34SOLVE.
