The speed limit is now 70-miles-per-hour on most interstates in Illinois, but before you set your cruise control, hold up, IDOT crews haven’t put the new signs up yet.

Crews were supposed to get started today, but snow and frigid temps across most of the state are slowing the process significantly. With snow in the forecast again this weekend, and temps the lowest we've seen in years, IDOT says it could take a couple of weeks to get all the signs in place.

IDOT reminds motorists to be on the lookout for workers changing the signs.

Until the signs are posted, drivers should continue to obey (even old) speed limit signs until the new ones are in place. A provision of new law also allows areas near St. Louis and Chicago to set their own speed limits in certain areas, likely to be lower.
