Barnes Sentenced to Prison, Restitution for Greenup Arsons

Greenup resident Levi Barnes has been sentenced to prison and must make hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution for a series of arsons committed in the Greenup area since 2010.

The 22-year-old Barnes pleaded guilty in September to some 20 counts related to the arsons. Barnes was sentenced to 10 years in prison on a count of aggravated arson, and was sentenced to five years in prison on four counts of arson and those sentences to be served with the aggravated arson count.  He was also sentenced to 10 years in prison on 17 counts of residential arson and those sentences will be served concurrently, but they will be served once Barnes' time to be served for aggravated arson is completed.

Barnes was also placed on three years' mandatory supervised release on the aggravated arson count and two years' release on the other counts.  

Barnes was also ordered to make restitution of $435,609.47 to those whose properties were damaged or destroyed by the arsons, and was fined $5,000 plus court costs.

In imposing the sentence, the Court recommended Barnes be placed in a facility that offers substance abuse and mental health treatment programs.

Barnes' co-defendant, 23-year-old Paul McCormick of Greenup pleaded guilty in August to six of the 19 counts he faced.  McCormick received a 4-1/2 year prison sentence on one count and three years on another with one sentence to be served after the other.  He was also ordered to make $58,000 restitution to the arson victims.
