The Effingham Park Board has policies in place regarding cancellations due to rain and lightning, but there's nothing about cancelling due to the heat.  The recent weather has prompted that item to be addressed.

Park commissioners discussed the matter at length Thursday evening.  Park District Director Jeff Althoff said he'll check with other park districts to see what policies they might have in place and adopt those to Effingham's situation.

One way to get cool is to take a dip in the pool.  Althoff said a whole lot of people will be doing that on Saturday, July 21, when the Effingham Red Tide swim team will be hosting their conference swim meet at Kluthe Memorial Pool.  He said the pool at Evergreen Hollow Park will be closed to the public on that date in anticipation of some 600 people being on hand throughout the day of the meet.

On the improvement front, Althoff reported that the new tennis courts at Evergreen Hollow Park should be finished any day, and said that bids would soon be taken on additional asphalting of roadways at Community Park.  He said the areas around the southwest diamond at Community Park will be redone to make the area more accessible to all.

Althoff and the commissioners also discussed the establishment of the Devon Poland Wear Scholarship.  The scholarship set up in memory of the Effingham native has resulted in donations of $8,567 to date.  Althoff said he would meet with the Wears to develop an application form.  The goal is to make Park District programs available to those who otherwise could not afford to participate.  He said, "We hope to make the scholarships available this fall or winter so kids won't get left out."

Althoff said additional information would be posted on the Park District website once the guidelines are finalized.
