The much-discussed downsizing of the Effingham Post Office takes effect after Saturday's mail.

Effingham Postmaster Dennis Whitten Friday said Saturday is the last day the local post office will run the mail sorting machine.  As of this coming week, postal customers will see a Champaign cancellation on their mail, rather than Effingham.

Whitten said 24 people who have worked at the Effingham office received letters offering other positions.  He is unsure how many affected employees will be accepting the new positions in other locations and on other shifts.

Whitten said Effingham will still serve as a dock transfer point for those with 624 zip codes so that will mean the retention of some jobs in addition to those who will still staff the local post office windows.
