The large majority of those gathered for a public hearing on a proposed solid waste ordinance for Fayette County this week were opposed to the idea if the comments heard were any indication.

Some 200 people gathered Tuesday night at Vandalia Junior High School Gymnasium for the hearing and almost all comments heard were in opposition to a solid waste ordinance.  Some voiced opposition to any kind of zoning in unincorporated parts of the county and the issue of tipping fees was never considered during the two-hour discussion.

The matter of the ordinance never came to a vote; instead the issue was referred back to committee.  The matter is expected to be on the Board's September agenda, but might never be called for consideration.

During regular business, the Fayette board reappointed Clyde Austin as Commissioner of Diveley Levee and Drainage District; approved a preliminary engineering agreement to replace the Ramsey Township Bridge over Ash Creek; okayed the purchase of a vehicle for the County EMA if it meets requirements; and agreed to contribute $50,000 toward the cost of a water line from Fast Stop north.  The project is hoped to expand economic development in the county.

The Fayette board did not consider an increase in the Court Automation Fee, and did not consider a liquor license for the Lake House at Vandalia Lake.
