Jasper County board members are reaching the end of a campaign to choose a new county flag.

Designs were submitted in the fall, and voting concluded in early January. The commission formed to oversee the process unanimously recommended a Unit Flag with Eagle. The flag is a variation of a flag designed by Barbara J. Eaton.

The royal blue of the flag symbolizes patriotism. The circle on the flag symbolizes unity, the unity of the government and the people of Jasper County. The smaller stars symbolize the 11 townships within the borders of Jasper County. The eagle symbolizes the national bird, school mascot, and the large population of eagles in Jasper County. The blue in the middle represents the Embarras River, which runs through the county. The fields depicted in orange symbolize agriculture and growth. Orange and blue also symbolize the Jasper Community Unit #1 school colors.

The goal is to reach a final decision at the March board meeting.

The Board also approved contributing toward the cost of Health Department Building renovations. Most of the $1.3 million in renovations are financed through services and grants, but the Board agreed to contribute $124,000 for completion of their interior renovations. Board members also purchased a 64-by-40-foot building at 903 Van Buren Street for $225,000.

The Board adopted a road use agreement involving the County, Newton Solar and South Muddy Township. Newton Solar will be allowed to use public roads for construction. Newton Solar plans a 52MW solar facility and a 2MW battery storage at the Newton Power Station.
