A man is dead after apparently shooting himself during an altercation with Charleston police.
The incident occurred at 1:07am Saturday. Charleston police were dispatched to the 200 block of West Lincoln Avenue to conduct a well-being check on a 22-year-old man who phoned 911 requesting immediate assistance.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to identify the issues involved in the situation. During the course of the investigation, what police termed a "rapidly-evolving event" took place where a Charleston Police Department officer was disarmed. A preliminary investigation indicates the individual took possession of the weapon and discharged the firearm toward himself.
Charleston Fire Department EMS personnel arrived to render aid and took the man for treatment. Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer said the man has been identified as Yahacov Dennis of Charleston. Dennis was taken to Carle Hospital in Urbana, where he died at 10:34am Saturday.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The Charleston Police Department requested the assistance of the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 5 to investigate the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
Charleston police said this was an isolated incident and said there is no threat to the safety of the community.
