The North Clay Board of Education heard from Superintendent Keith Price at this week's meeting as to options for additional funding the district could receive if the 1% county schools facility tax were to pass in the April 1 election.

Price said for the most part, any construction for school purposes would qualify, along with fire prevention, safety, energy conservation, disabled accessibility, and school security. Also, school resource officers and mental health professionals are now included.

Board members discussed utilizing a portion of the revenue to abate current bonds to lower the overall tax rate. Board member Jon Carroll suggested a commerce study to determine what percentge of sales comes from people that live outside Clay County. The Board also directed its building and grounds committee to conduct a building study regarding additional building projects that could be funded by the sales tax revenue.

There was also discussion on the current district construction project. Price said the first coat of paint has been placed in the new gym; interior framing of the ag shop and classroom continues; windows are installed in the newly-constructed south tower; and the sealing up of the gym, corridors, and other areas of the project along with with providing temporary heat and power until permanent power can be installed in those areas. If everything stays on schedule, the new bathrooms (upstairs and downstairs) in the new tower should be operational by mid-January.

More of the construction project can be found on the North Clay Facebook page.

In personnel moves, the North Clay board hired Jim Sapp as transportation and maintenance coordinator, accepted a letter of intent to retire from Alice Robinson, approved an unpaid day for Katrina VanDyke; accepted the letter of retirement from Marla Gillet as part-time custodianl; approved seeking a part-time bus driver position; and providing the administration permission to hire non-certified staff as needed.
