Teutopolis village officials can move ahead with plans to construct a 21-mile water transmission line after action Tuesday by the Newton City Council to supply water to the village.

The Newton Council agreed to supply up to 360,000 gallons of treated water per day to Teutopolis.  The agreement is for 40 years.

Newton Mayor Mark Bolander said the cost of the project is on Teutopolis, except for a meter to monitor Teutopolis' water usage and some telemetry work.

The key for Teutopolis is a lower price for the water than what has been charged in recent years by the City of Effingham.  The savings are expected to more than offset the estimated $1.6 million cost to construct the water transmission line.

The next steps for Teutopolis officials are to secure funding for the project, possibly through bonds, and to begin securing easements from landowners to develop a path for the transmission line.
