An exchange of gunfire in northern Illinois resulted in the death of a suspect and the wounding of a Newton County, Indiana, sheriff's deputy.

The incident occurred at about 8:45pm Sunday. Officers from the Iroquois County Sheriff's Office were engaged in a pursuit of a armed suspect believed with a hostage. The pursuit went into Indiana, where the Newton County deputy became involved in the pursuit.

The pursuit came back into Illinois and the suspect crashed in Sheldon. The suspect, 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, exited his vehicle and gunfire was exchanged. During the gunfire, Roselius and the Newton County deputy were struck.

Roselius was pronounced dead at the scene. The Newton County deputy, Corporal Brandon Scheiber, was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana where he was listed in critical condition.

No hostage was located inside the Roselius vehicle.
