Sunday was a busy day for Teutopolis Fire Protection District firefighters.
Teutopolis firefighters with assistance from Montrose firefighters were called out at 5:27pm to a crash involving three semi tractor trailers on I-70 eastbound between Effingham and Montrose.
No injuries were reported, but one of the rigs needed a tow and diesel fuel was spread on the traveling lane in the construction zone. Firefighters used oil dry to soak up the fuel. Debris was towed away and the fuel was cleaned up. Firefighters cleared the scene at 6:53pm.
The most serious incident was reported at 1:40pm about three miles east of the later crash. Teutopolis firefighters found a tractor trailer semi with heavy fire conditions at the rear of the trailer. The driver of the rig was able to disconnect the trailer prior to arrival of firefighters. The incident occurred in the westbound lanes, again within the construction zone. Firefighters extinguished the fire and the lanes were reopened at 2:37pm. Firefighters cleared the scene at 3:49pm. The truck driver was not injured.
