A hearing on whether Ray Tate can withdraw his guilty plea to murder has been set for August 2.

Tate pleaded guilty to the December 2021 shooting death of Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Riley and was sentenced to life in prison. Tate later indicated that he wants to withdraw his guilty plea.

A status hearing in the matter has been set for July 23.

Following Deputy Riley's shooting death, Tate fled the scene into Missouri where other crimes occurred, then returned to Clinton County, Illinois, where other offenses including kidnapping occurred. Those cases are still pending.
