Local Congressman John Shimkus is recovering following non-surgical heart procedures at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.  Shimkus underwent an electrophysiology test, then an ablation Tuesday, and doctors expect a full and healthy recovery.

Shimkus noticed an abnormal heart rhythm and sought medical advice prior to Tuesday's scheduled procedures.

Following the procedures, Shimkus will be recuperating at home, thus, he will miss all House votes in Washington this week.  In addition, he will be unable to attend a hearing in the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy that he chairs.

It is anticipated that Shimkus will return to his normal work schedule the week of July 15.

In March 2005, Shimkus had open heart surgery to repair a genetic valve condition.  This heart arrhythmia is also a genetic condition.
