State Representative John Cavaletto (R-Salem) wants to make residents of his district aware of new laws taking effect on July 1.

One bill set to start on Monday is Senate Bill 2888 or “Julie’s Law,” a bill to prohibit court supervision from being granted to people caught driving more than 31 miles per hour above the posted speed limit.

Additionally, Senate Bill 3638, which creates a board to license sex offender evaluators and treatment providers, and Senate Bill 3764, which provides greater guidance as to the name of a debtor to be provided on financing statements, will take effect.

“A lot of bills get passed in Springfield. Some are good and some are not so good, but we need to be aware of all of them. Ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking the law,” said Rep. Cavaletto.

Another piece of legislation which goes into effect on Monday is House Bill 1261, which bans the sale of zinc air button batteries in Illinois. The batteries are to be banned under the state’s Mercury-added Product Prohibition Act.

The new laws take effect July 1, the same day as the start of the state’s new fiscal year. Rep. Cavaletto encouraged local residents with questions about new legislation to contact his district office at (618) 548-9080.
