The former Village Clerk of Dieterich and Strasburg has pleaded guilty to taking between $100,000 and $500,000 in village funds.
57-year-old Paularae Johnson received a six-year prison sentence.
Johnson admitted to taking village funds from Strasburg during 2009 and 2010. She could have received up to 15 years in prison. The theft charge from Shelby County where Strasburg is located alleged that Johnson took over $90,000 in village funds between May 1, 2009 and October 14, 2010 when her employment was terminated.
Johnson left the village clerk's post in Dieterich to go to Strasburg and served both communities for a time during a transition period.
The Illinois Municipal League filed a separate civil suit against Johnson on behalf of both Dieterich and Strasburg, related to the insurance companies that cover thefts from both villages. Johnson was ordered to make restitution of the funds taken.
