North Clay Board Restores Sports Via Private Funding

After a tough meeting in March, some good news was heard at Thursday night's meeting of the
North Clay Board of Education.

Among many decisions in March, the North Clay board cut most sports for next school year.
Students were allowed to vote on which two high school sports and which two junior high
sports would be retained, but the other sports were given the axe.

On Thursday, though, the Board approved private donations for several sports to be funded for the 2013-2014 school year.  Those include fall baseball and high school softball, junior high
track, 5th and 6th grade basketball, frosh/soph girls basketball and frosh/soph boys basketball, junior high girls softball, junior high Scholar Bowl, high school Scholar Bowl, and from Henkels and McCoy a $3,000 contribution toward 6th grade basketball, junior high girls
softball and junior high boys track.

North Clay board members approved a parental authorization for student transportation form
for extracurricular activities.  The move comes after the Board decided last month to end paid transportation to extra-curricular activities.

Board members heard from Jeff Hembree regarding the date for an annual prayer time for the
school district, to be held Saturday, June 22 at 3pm.  Hembree will make more information
available as the event approaches.  The Board also heard from Lindsay Lash, who voiced
appreciation for the opportunity to teach in the district.  Following a closed session, the
Board approved Lash's resignation as a junior high Social Science teacher at the end of the
current school year. 

In other personnel matters, the North Clay Board hired Billy Coble as high school varsity
basketball coach for next year and hired Ben Farleigh as high school JV basketball coach
for next year.  The Board also appointed Tony Smith as a Board member to fill the vacancy
created by the resignation of Troy Britton.

The Board amended the District's Random Student Drug Policy.  The change removes the
option to challenge a positive drug test result.  A positive result will be valid once it
comes from a Medical Review Officer after a split specimen lab test is completed.  At the
request of a Board member, the district's athletic policy will be on the May 6 agenda for
review.
