The Effingham Public Library Board is discussing an expansion of the library's service area.

Library Director Amanda McKay said the matter is being discussed to increase the services available to library patrons. More programs and more materials would mean more expense. An extension of the library service area would also mean more resources, which could mean Effingham citizens would pay less.

McKay said the Board met with John Chrastka of EveryLibrary on what would be involved in an expansion of the service area and how to conduct a successful campaign. She said that if the Board decides to pursue a referendum on a library district, they would likely put the question on the ballot in the November 2022 election.

McKay acknowledged that much work lays ahead if the campaign is pursued. She will be meeting individually with library board members this weekend to discuss how to proceed. Other milestones will be a poll to gauge interest in the idea, open discussion of the matter at each month's Board meeting, and a listening session to hear from those who would be impacted.
