JC Penney opened a store in Mattoon in 1920.
100 years later, the company has announced plans to close their Mattoon location.
The move is part of Penney's plan to close 200 stores nationwide. Some 150 stores have already been closed.
JC Penney said the Mattoon location will be one of 15 stores to close in March 2021.
There are more than 30 people employed at the Mattoon location; more than 40 during the Christmas season.
JC Penney opened on Broadway Avenue in downtown Mattoon in 1920 and operated at two different locations on Broadway until relocating to the brand-new Cross County Mall in 1971. Penney's is one of two stores that has remained in the mall since its opening.
The JC Penney store in Effingham closed in 2017.
